Epson EcoTank ET-8550 Review

Epson EcoTank ET-8550 review: a convincing A3 + photo printer without cartridges

The Epson EcoTank ET-8550 is an A3 + photo printer without cartridges. This is a multifunction model that aims for print quality. However, its speeds are not to be outdone.

Presentation

The Epson ET-8550 is an A3 + photo printer from the EcoTank range. It is therefore an inkjet printer without cartridges since it is equipped with ink tanks. More expensive to buy, these models enjoy a much lower cost per page than cartridge printers. The ET-8550 is sold by Epson at a price of 850 €.

Design

For an A3 + printer, the Epson EcoTank ET-8550 is quite compact with its shutters closed (52.3 x 37.9 x 16.9 cm).

Its output tray is motorized and deploys automatically. As for the paper inputs, we find two trays, including an A4 at the front, as well as an A3 + tray and a direct A3 + entry at the back. It is also possible to print on CDs and DVDs and even banners up to 2m in length and 1.3mm in thickness from the direct paper feed.

Connection

The ET-8550 can print over wifi, Wi-Fi Direct and Ethernet. It is also compatible with the Apple AirPrint service and allows printing from an SD card slot or a USB port, both positioned on the front of the printer.

Consumption

In standby, the EcoTank ET-8550 consumes approximately 1.1 W. This is an average value. We measured a consumption of 20 W once the printer stabilized in photo printing, which is still quite correct.

On the noise side, the ET-8550 still does not stand out from the average printer, for good or bad. Thus, our sound level meter positioned 1 m from the ET-8550 indicated 45 dB in photo printing, once the printer stabilized, and up to 63 dB in peak when printing documents. Unfortunately, if a silent mode is proposed, it is not very effective with peaks raised to 60 dB, while the printing speeds are almost unchanged.

Cost per page

To provide better color fidelity, the Epson EcoTank ET-8550 uses no less than six different inks. Epson announces a battery life of 2300 10 x 15 cm photos for its ink bottles. In office automation, the autonomy is 5500 pages for the black ink bottle and 4900 pages for the other inks. Based on Epson's price tag for its 114 benchmark ink bottles, the cost per page of the EcoTank ET-8550 is 2.2 euro cents (€ 0.022). In monochrome, the cost per page drops to 0.3 euro cents (0.003 €). These printing costs are higher than conventional ink tank printers, often around 0.7 euro cents per color page, but still around 5-10 times cheaper than the average cartridge printer.

STRONG POINTS

  • Exceptionally low cost per page (€ 0.022).
  • Very good photo printing quality.
  • Good printing quality in office automation.
  • Good printing speeds.
  • Convenient touchscreen.
  • Numerous paper entries.
  • Complete connectivity.

WEAK POINTS

  • Slightly high colorimetric drift for a photo printer.
  • A little high noise pollution.
